Do we want what we want, or what wanting promises us?
We want to write a book. But do we want to write, or do we want to be an author?
We want to start something. But do we want the experience itself, or the identity that comes with it?
When I started inspiraTO, a ten-minute play festival, I was inspired by seeing other theatre creators making things I wanted to express myself. I wanted to create something of my own.
But what if being recognised as a creative person had become the primary goal?
We want our work to be recognised. Understandably. But what happens when the desire for recognition starts shaping what we're willing to create?
Perhaps a desire contains several different wants, some of which we haven't bothered to separate.
How much of what we want is about the thing itself, and how much is about what we hope it will do for us?
